Using XMaps Remote Control

XMaps Remote Control is basically a web-enabled version of the Setup windows that XMaps supports from the UT Mod menu. Everything you can do in the Setup windows, you can do in XMaps Remote Control. From initial setup to managing your map lists and changing your clients, it's all in XMaps Remote Control.

If you've never used XMaps before, so none of this means anything to you, I'd strongly recommend getting hold of the XMaps documentation and giving it the once-over. XMaps is a small but powerful UnrealTournament mutator, and you'll get more out of it if you take the time to read up on it's features. The XMaps docs are installed (when you install XMaps) into your UT\Help\XMaps directory, accessed from the file XMaps.htm, or you can view them online here.

By default, XMaps Remote Control uses your browser settings to determine the size of text it should use to display its pages. If you would prefer XMaps Remote Control to use a fixed text size, check out the options described in the Design page.

Setting up XMaps for the first time using XMaps Remote Control

If you've never run XMaps on your server before, or you've just installed it, you need to inform XMaps of your server's installed game types. XMaps saves this information so it can load quickly; you'll need to refresh the information when you install or remove a game type on your server. Note that refreshing the game types for XMaps does not destroy your XMaps configuration.

To refresh the game types, connect to XMaps Remote Control, click on the [XMaps Setup] menu on the left, then select 'refresh game types'. The page describes what happens next.

Next, you'll probably want to set up some Extended Map lists. Click 'game map lists' in the [XMaps Setup] menu, select the game type you want to create a map list for, then click the Create List button near the bottom of the page. To get XMaps to run the map list, you'll need to change the XMaps map selection mode to one of the Extended... options. Click 'xmaps options' from the [XMaps Setup] menu and away you go.

You may also want to restrict access to XMaps' features to certain users or client machines; if that's the case, click the 'client access' option from the [XMaps Setup] menu. The 'server limits' option may also be useful when you're setting up XMaps for the first time.

From here on in, you can change XMaps' setup to your heart's content ... when used alongside the XMaps HUD menu (within the game), XMaps Remote Control means there's no XMaps feature you cannot access remotely.

Finding your way around XMaps Remote Control

XMaps Remote Control is divided into two parts, accessed via the [Current Game] and [XMaps Setup] menus. The [Current Game] menu options give you control over the currently selected map, Favourites and Extended Map list. [XMaps Setup] supports all the options that you used to find in the XMaps Setup windows from the UT Mod menu.

Most of the options from the main Mod menu Setup window are accessed from the 'xmaps options' menu; the Game Options window features generally have their own menu items, such as 'game map lists' and 'game favourites'. In each of these pages, first select the game type you want to change and then make your choices.

If you want to load a specific map from your UT installation, any Extended Map List or set of Favourites, use the 'map selector' option, available in both the [Current Game] and [XMaps Setup] menus. Using the map selector, you can load any map in any game type, so it provides the same level of flexibility as the Game Override and Maps Installed features of the XMaps HUD menu.

Since XMaps Remote Control is web-based, it's also 'stateless', so I'd advise you to use the provided Apply... buttons after making any changes. When you're modifying, for example, the contents of map lists, each button you click saves the changes you make. Effectively, there's no Cancel or Undo facility. Once you use XMaps Remote Control a couple of times, you'll get used to this very quickly.

The Status Bar

At the bottom of XMaps Remote Control is a status bar that tells you the current state of XMaps as it is running on your server. This information is only refreshed when a new menu item is selected, so you may want to use the Refresh button in the middle of the bar to get the information up to date. Some of the items inthe status bar, such as 'Current Map', are also links to the XMaps Remote Control pages that control those items.
